Clients facing divorce are rightfully concerned about finances, particularly after a long term marriage where one spouse has stayed at home and the other has been the provider. In a marriage of 17 years or longer, there is a presumption in favor of permanent alimony when one spouse has the need and the other has the ability to pay.
It is important to keep in mind that this alimony will be based on the standard of living as established during the marriage. There are no magic formulas to calculate alimony, the court must consider all the factors on a case by case basis. Remember that every case is different!
