Child support remains a hot topic when parents consider divorce. How much money one will receive or have to pay is often one of the first questions asked. The answer is the amount is determined by income. Child support is calculated on the income of each parent.

ALL INCOME must be reported. Everything must be counted! Did you know that disability is considered income? Interest from investments is also income. That gross income figure can be reduced by some net income deductions though. For example, a mandatory union fee should be deducted. Your attorney will help by answering your questions to determine your income and income deductions.

Usually, both parties’ attorneys share the calculations with one another. Working together and exchanging this information is how child support obligations and amounts are determined.

There are free online calculators such as the Florida Child Support Calculator but beware that as the website states “The Calculator is provided for entertainment and informational purposes only…”.
